Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, with substitute Bruno Guimaraes scoring the winner just five minutes after coming off the bench.

James Justin had given Leeds a deserved lead early in the second half, but Riccardo Calafiori equalised before Guimaraes completed the turnaround to secure all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The result saw Arsenal bounce back from their 3-0 defeat to Brighton before the international break, while Leeds suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession during the opening stages but struggled to turn that control into meaningful chances against a well-organised Leeds defence.

Daniel Farke’s visitors looked comfortable without the ball and were able to cause problems when they broke forward, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin providing a focal point in attack.

Leeds were arguably the better side during the first half, restricting Arsenal’s attacking players and frustrating the home crowd as the Gunners struggled to find a way through.

Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke attempted to provide width, but the hosts lacked their usual sharpness in the final third, while Leeds continued to threaten on the counter.

The two teams went into the break level, leaving Arteta with plenty to address after a difficult opening 45 minutes.

Leeds break deadlock before Arsenal take control

Leeds made their strong performance count 10 minutes into the second half when Justin opened the scoring.

Gabriel Gudmundsson delivered a low ball into the area and Justin was on hand to finish past David Raya, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead and leaving Arsenal facing a second successive league defeat.

The goal forced Arsenal to respond, and they were back on level terms just seven minutes later.

Ben White provided the assist as Calafiori arrived to volley home from close range in the 62nd minute, beating James Trafford to make it 1-1.

The equaliser changed the momentum of the contest, with Arsenal suddenly looking more threatening as they pushed for a second goal.

Arteta responded by making a triple substitution in the 65th minute, introducing Guimaraes, Viktor Gyokeres and Jurrien Timber in an attempt to turn the game in his side’s favour.

The changes paid off almost immediately.

In the 70th minute, Declan Rice picked out Guimaraes on the edge of the penalty area and the Brazilian midfielder fired a low effort into the net to complete Arsenal’s comeback.

It was an impressive impact from the substitute, who had been on the pitch for only five minutes before scoring what proved to be the winner.

Leeds attempted to respond, with Farke introducing fresh attacking options including Brenden Aaronson and Harry Wilson as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

However, Arsenal looked increasingly comfortable after taking the lead and continued to threaten at the other end.

Martin Odegaard almost added a third in the closing stages after some excellent work from Rice near the byline. The midfielder managed to pull the ball across goal, but the chance ended with Trafford gathering possession following a deflection.
