Preview for England v Czechia

England will look to build on their record-breaking win over Croatia when they welcome the Czech Republic for Tuesday night’s UEFA Nations League clash.

Thomas Tuchel’s side sit second in League A Group 3 after collecting six points from their opening three matches, while the visitors arrive in England still searching for their first point of the campaign.

England produced arguably their finest performance under Tuchel when they dismantled Croatia 7-0 on Saturday evening.

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka both scored twice, while Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon were also on target as the Three Lions inflicted Croatia’s heaviest defeat since the country gained independence.

Tuchel says his side have “added another layer” to their playing style following the World Cup.

He said: “I never coached any team to follow my ideas when it’s not the strength of the players, personality of the players or the nature of the team itself.

“It always needs to match and we’ve tried to implement this since we arrived.

“We’ve always played with high energy off the ball and a very aggressive style off the ball, to high press. Now we added another layer, the intensity was very high on the ball.

“We did a lot of runs, a lot of counter movements, high intensity runs and invested a lot in counter pressing. It’s the next step. You need to be ready for the next one and not get carried away by what you did before.”

Another clean sheet on Tuesday would give England three consecutive wins without conceding for the first time this year, having last achieved that sequence during their 2025 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Czech Republic find themselves at the opposite end of the standings following a difficult start under Santi Denia.

They returned from the World Cup having collected only one point before beginning their Nations League campaign with three successive defeats.

Croatia beat the Czechs 2-1 in their opening fixture before England recorded a 2-0 victory in Prague.

Denia’s team then travelled to face world champions Spain on Saturday and suffered another defeat, this time going down 3-1.

The Czech Republic have now gone six matches without a victory across all competitions, losing each of their last four.

Team News for England v Czechia

Nico O’Reilly had already withdrawn from the squad before Saturday’s game, but Tuchel otherwise has plenty of options available as he considers rotating his starting XI.

However, England will be without Alex Scott, who has withdrawn through injury.

Tuchel said: “With Alex, it’s a strange one, I’m very sad about it. He trained in full before Croatia, did extra work after the training sessions, we knew he was in treatment but there were only green lights from him and the medics.

“When we were aware there was slight discomfort during the match and asked if he wanted to come off he said no. After the match, he said he could have played 90 minutes and didn’t feel an injury.

“Even before the scan he didn’t feel injured so it’s a strange one. There was zero risk taken from our side.”

Tuchel added that injury dropouts are common on international breaks and something he has had to adapt to.

“This is always the case when you name a squad.

“I’m never confident with a Friday press conference ahead of games on Saturday and Sunday. Could we not just wait until the Monday and make it easier for all of us?

“It’s just what it is. From 23 or 24 players, two or three had to pull out. I can assure everyone that player welfare is priority number one.

“But new training style and training times, different positions to play maybe, increase the chance of injury.”

The Czech Republic will definitely be without Krejci after the defender was sent off against Spain.

Denia can at least welcome Pavel Sulc back from suspension after the attacking midfielder missed Saturday’s defeat in Spain following his red card against England.

Vladimir Coufal remains a doubt after missing the Spain game because of a knee problem, meaning Denia may once again have to reshuffle his defensive options.

England v Czech Republic kicks off at 7:45pm BST on Tuesday, October 6. The match will be shown live and free in the UK on ITV1, with viewers also able to stream the game through ITVX.

Prediction for England v Czechia

England could hardly enter Tuesday’s game with more confidence after the demolition of Croatia.

Tuchel is likely to rotate parts of his starting XI, but the depth available to the England manager means that should do little to reduce the gulf between the two teams.

The Czech Republic have already lost to England on home soil during this international window and now travel without the suspended Krejci after losing four consecutive matches.
