Carlos Espi earns first Spain call-up after five-goal haul for U21s

Real Madrid striker Carlos Espi has received his first senior Spain call-up after being drafted into Luis de la Fuente’s squad for their remaining Nations League fixtures.

Espi had initially been away with Spain’s Under-21 side but has now been promoted to the senior squad following an injury to Ferran Torres.

Espi joins fellow Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen in the squad, while Marc Cucurella has also been selected by De la Fuente.

Five goals for Spain Under-21s

Espi’s promotion comes immediately after an extraordinary performance for Spain Under-21s during qualification for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship.

The striker scored five times as Spain demolished San Marino 13-0 on Wednesday.

His five-goal haul further strengthened his case for senior recognition, and De la Fuente has now moved quickly to bring the forward into his squad following Torres’s withdrawal.

Espi could make his senior debut when Spain host the Czech Republic in Oviedo on Saturday, October 3.

De la Fuente’s side will then travel to Croatia for their final game of the international break in Split on Tuesday, October 6.
