Dallas Cowboys trade for Joey Porter Jr. after Pittsburgh Steelers contract standoff

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. following months of uncertainty over his future.

Dallas will send Pittsburgh a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a second-round selection in 2028 in exchange for the 25-year-old.

The move brings Porter’s three-year spell with the Steelers to an end after a contract dispute and persistent back problems kept him off the field throughout the opening weeks of the season.

There is a chance Porter could make his Cowboys debut against the Houston Texans on Sunday, although Dallas will first have to assess whether he is ready to play after his lengthy absence.

The cornerback has not featured this season after aggravating a back injury during a mobility workout on the opening day of Steelers training camp.

Contract talks break down in Pittsburgh

Porter’s departure also follows a lengthy contract standoff between the player and the Steelers.

The 2023 second-round pick was seeking an extension during the offseason, but the two sides were unable to agree on the guaranteed money included in the proposed deal.

Discussions reportedly continued until shortly before Pittsburgh’s opening game against the Atlanta Falcons before the Steelers ended negotiations in line with their policy of not discussing new contracts during the regular season.

Porter leaves having started 41 games across his first three NFL seasons, recording three interceptions.

Pittsburgh will now continue with Asante Samuel Jr., Jamel Dean and rookie Daylen Everette among their options at outside cornerback.
