Vanderson opened his Brazil account as the Selecao scored in the third minute against Australia in a friendly at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday – but the Socceroos turned the scoreline around within 31 minutes before Raphinha’s penalty sent the sides in level at half-time.

Monaco wideman Vanderson, who received a late call-up following Wesley’s injury, collected Gabriel Bontempo’s short pass inside the box on the right and arrowed a half-volley past goalkeeper Patrick Beach to put the visitors ahead in style.

Beach made an excellent double save to stop Brazil doubling their lead a minute later, repelling two shots by Barcelona forward Raphinha from inside the box after Bournemouth’s Rayan had fed the 12-goal top scorer in La Liga.

Those stops looked all the more valuable when Benfica centre-back Circati flicked in to equalise at the back post from a corner, with the goal allowed following a Video Assistant Referee check.

Five minutes later, St Pauli midfielder Connor Metcalfe finished an intricate spell of Australia passing by blasting a glorious strike beyond the dive of 20-year-old debutant goalkeeper Otavio.

Raphinha then fired in a spot kick in the 45th minute, referee Yusuke Araki consulting the pitchside monitor to adjudge Harry Souttar to have fouled Danilo Santos.

The teams were meeting for the second time in four days, having shared a 1-1 draw in Townsville on Friday after Rayan scored a 94th-minute equaliser.

Sporting winger Nestory Irankunda had put Australia ahead during the second half of that game with a sublime dipping free-kick and the 20-year-old’s side demonstrated their credentials again by responding in stirring fashion to falling behind in the second match of the double-header.

Australia are playing their first games since being knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Egypt in the round of 32, while Brazil lost 2-1 to Norway in the last 16.

Australia head coach Tony Popovic named an unchanged side as part of a squad in which two hugely experienced players – goalkeeper Mat Ryan and midfielder Mat Leckie – were among the surprise omissions.

Brondby winger Marcus Younis made his debut in Townsville and Jacob Chapman, Kealey Adamson, Eli Adams, Yaya Dukuly, Kasey Bos and Dylan Leonard were poised to earn their first caps from the bench.

Alex Robertson (medical reasons), Mohamed Toure (shoulder), Cristian Volpato (hamstring), Cameron Burgess (Achilles) and Jordan Bos (knee) were injured.
