Jonathan David’s finish and Alejandro Grimaldo’s penalty sent Atletico Madrid second in La Liga as 10-player Real Madrid suffered their second defeat of Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge by losing at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Grimaldo coolly beat Thibaut Courtois from the spot on the wing-back’s 31st birthday, striking after Dean Huijsen was sent off to give Diego Simeone’s side a 53rd-minute lead as part of a typically tense contest featuring several flashpoints involving the home boss and counterpart Mourinho.

David found ample space inside the box six minutes later to slide in and meet Giuliano Simeone’s cross for the second, celebrating with his manager and teammates as Atleti put themselves on course to move a point above Madrid and five behind leaders Barcelona.

Antonio Rudiger gave Madrid hope with an expert 89th-minute header from Bernardo Silva’s free-kick, but Atleti held on to condemn Los Blancos to a second defeat in three away matches.

Atleti vs Real Madrid: Huijsen red card ‘changed game’

Despite the fiery nature of the encounter, neither side had a meaningful attempt until the 40th minute of a game that turned on Huijsen’s dismissal.

The centre-back was adjudged to have pulled Simeone when the midfielder was clear inside the box in a challenge described as a “moment of madness” by former Madrid winger Steve McManaman.

“He just got caught with a 50-yard ball behind him,” said McManaman (via ESPN), who also praised Simeone’s decision to send Koke on at half-time to mark Vinicius Junior. “One goal changes the whole game.”
