Preview for Washington Commanders @ Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys host the Washington Commanders with both teams desperate to avoid starting the season with a second successive divisional loss.
Having been the subject of much preseason optimism, the Cowboys started the season in hugely disappointing fashion as they suffered a 28-20 defeat to the New York Giants. Washington, meanwhile, pushed the defending NFC East champions the Philadelphia Eagles hard in a 24-22 loss at Lincoln Financial Field.
On the road again in Week 2, the danger for the Commanders is that they will be on receiving end of a backlash from an extremely talented Dallas offense.
That unit did not fire on all cylinders against New York, with Dallas limited to just 244 yards of total offense in their opener. The defense failed dramatically to live up to the offseason hype, as the Cowboys surrendered 394 yards to the Giants.
The Cowboys did not score until wide receiver CeeDee Lamb found the endzone with just under six minutes remaining in the second quarter.
And fellow wideout George Pickens made it clear the Cowboys are desperate to avoid another slow start in their first home game of the new campaign.
“It’s definitely urgent, because it’s [another] division game, such as the Giants was,” Pickens said of the feeling of urgency in the Cowboys’ locker room.
“We definitely need to nail down our Ps and Qs. I think that’s the mindset that people are honing in now.
“[That was] the first game, but I know we got a lot more games to come. But, definitely as a unit, and I think Schotty [head coach Brian Schottenheimer] said that, too: as a team, I feel like we could have started a little faster. [It’s] always motivating, [though].
“We probably, as a team, all can get better, and we will when we come out this weekend.”
The Commanders narrowly missed out on forcing overtime against the Eagles when a two-point conversion try failed after Jayden Daniels had found Antonio Williams for a touchdown with just over a minute remaining.
Yet there is significant concern for Washington in this matchup, with their secondary set to come up against one of the premier wideout duos in the NFL in Lamb and Pickens.
Head coach Dan Quinn was openly critical of his secondary after the Commanders allowed Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to throw three passing touchdowns in Week 1.
And there will be a huge onus on cornerbacks Amik Robertson and Mike Sainristil to hold that Lamb and Pickens in check.
Such a task is easier said that done, though, and if the Commanders cannot find ways to restrict the Cowboys’ aerial attack, then they will need Daniels to reprise his 2024 Offensive Player of the Year form to have a chance of pulling off the upset.
Prediction for Washington Commanders @ Dallas Cowboys
The Commanders hung tough on the road against the Eagles, but the Dallas offense should do a better job of exploiting Washington’s weaknesses on defense.
Prediction: Washington Commanders 17 – 31 Dallas Cowboys
