Alexis Mac Allister has outlined his disappointment at not being offered a new contract at Liverpool, describing the club’s reluctance to extend his stay at Anfield as “very sad”.
The Argentina midfielder’s current deal still has two years left to run and attempts by his agent to negotiate fresh terms this summer were rebuffed by the Merseyside club.
Mac Allister insisted, however, that he was still committed to Liverpool despite confirming he had offers from elsewhere.
He said: “I received the news that the club was not in a position to renew my contract, which of course makes me very sad.
“I think everyone can see I give 100% for this club, every single day in training, I have good games, bad games. I always give my best.
“I see Dominik [Szoboszlai] and Ryan [Gravenberch] renewing their contracts, which makes me happy. But at the same time it makes me sad I didn’t get mine.
“There is still time, I will give 100% until my last day. We will see what happens.
“There were options to leave this summer. Right now I’m in the right club.”
Asked if he knew why the club were not willing to give him a new deal, the 27-year-old added: “Not really, I did not have any direct conversations. They were with my agent.
“I don’t want to say things they never said, but they said they were not in the position to renew me.”
Mac Allister confident of strong season for Liverpool
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023 for a bargain £35million and played a key role in the club’s title success under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season.
He struggled the following year, as did many of his team-mates, but is relishing life under Andoni Iraola and is hoping to help the club get off to a winning start in the Champions League on Wednesday night when Atletico Madrid visit Anfield.
“I am very confident about this season,” he said.
“We have a lot of quality, we have a very good coach that brought his ideas.
“I think we improved a lot since the beginning of the season, we have the desire to win trophies. We have experience, we have trophies, we have everything to be successful, but we need to be all together.
“You can have the best players, best ideas, but if we are not on the same page, it’s impossible.”
Working with new Liverpool boss Iraola excites Mac Allister
On former Bournemouth boss Iraola, he added: “He’s a really good coach, he knows what he wants to do and we are trying to get there.
“I haven’t had any conversations with him about it [the contract].
“I think this can be a successful year, that’s why I think this is the right club and the right moment to be here.”
