Chelsea scored their first goal at Stamford Bridge under Xabi Alonso when £117 million signing Morgan Rogers tapped in the opener in a friendly against Real Sociedad on Saturday.
England midfielder Rogers, who became the most expensive British player ever when the 24-year-old arrived from Aston Villa in July, pounced after goalkeeper Alex Remiro saved Joao Pedro’s header from Pedro Neto’s right-wing cross.
The Blues are nine days away from their first competitive match under new head coach Alonso, travelling to Fulham in the Premier League (20:00 BST).

Rogers was prolific last season, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists for the Villans on his way to winning the Europa League Player of the Season award as his former club lifted the trophy.
No English player bettered Rogers’ total of 84 attempts at goal in the 2025/26 Premier League, while no midfielder eclipsed his tally of 32 on target.
His goals-vs-expected-goals total of 3.22 was also the eighth-highest of any player in the division, helped by Rogers’ talent for spectacular strikes.
Alonso is hoping to revive Chelsea’s fortunes following their 10th-placed finish in 2025/26, losing as many games as they won in the top flight.
Sociedad start their La Liga campaign at Real Betis on August 21, having finished 10th last season and won the Copa del Rey.

For the first match at Stamford Bridge of his tenure, Alonso made 11 changes from the 3-3 draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim in Gelang Patah the previous Sunday.
New signings Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra were among the starters, while Aaron Anselmino, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha had been injury doubts and were not involved.
