Max Dowman produced a goal and assist as Arsenal cruised past hosts Girona in a friendly at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Saturday.

Kai Havertz slotted in from 16-year-old Dowman’s perceptive through ball to put the reigning Premier League champions ahead in the 16th minute, followed by new £34 million striker Christos Tzolis angling in their second with 15 minutes of the first half remaining.

Arnau Martinez emphatically headed in a reply from Kim Min-Su’s corner five minutes after half-time, but Dowman – who became the youngest scorer in Premier League history in March – then fired in from outside the box three minutes later.

Gabriel Jesus ran on to a pass from Ben White, who is continuing his comeback from a serious knee injury, to smash in Arsenal’s fourth in the 55th minute.

The match was for the Costa Brava Trophy, which has been hosted by Girona since 1970 and featured the likes of Wolves, Tottenham and Manchester City.

Girona had won the previous five editions of the game but struggled to contain Arsenal and looked a side in transition, having been relegated from La Liga last season.

Owned by the City Football Group that also controls clubs including Manchester City, Girona have a new manager in Quique Alvarez.

The former Barcelona youth coach has replaced Michel, who guided Girona to a debut Champions League campaign two seasons ago as part of his five-year reign.

New 6ft 7in Ukrainian forward Oleksandr Pyshchur, who joined Girona from Hungarian club ETO, who was on the bench.

Fellow 21-year-old Izan Gonzalez came on in midfield after joining from fifth-tier club Cornella.

Former Real Madrid B and Spain youth midfielder Ivan Morante has signed from second-tier team Burgos but is not involved.

White starting was good news for Arsenal but full-back Jurrien Timber had left the camp because of a groin problem.

Of Arsenal’s players to feature at the World Cup 2026, defender Piero Hincapie and forwards Viktor Gyokeres and Havertz also started.

Head coach Mikel Arteta made eight substitutions in the 62nd minute, giving chances to many of his emerging academy products.

Hincapie, Havertz and Gyokeres made way after 33 minutes. Brazil pair Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli had trained but were not involved.
