Jorge Castillo was adjudged to have fouled the impressive Shea Lacey for United’s equaliser, allowing Mbeumo to coolly convert before clipping in the 74th-minute winner following enterprising work by Jack Fletcher on the right.
Fourth in La Liga last season, Atleti were unfortunate not to equalise when Rodrigo Mendoza’s header hit a post.

Man United vs Atletico Madrid: Mason Mount ‘superb’
Former United winger Ben Thornley picked midfielder Mason Mount as his nominee for player of the match.
“It probably would be… him and Andrey Santos have formed [a strong partnership],” Thornley told MUTV.
“It’s a superb performance from him. In general, again, it’s been an all-round excellent team performance.
“They will have got so much out of this; Michael Carrick will be very, very pleased. The win is a bonus but it’s the fact that players have got minutes in their legs and the understanding [building] on the pitch.”
