Lisandro Martinez and Alexis Mac Allister have both lashed out at Argentina’s critics who revelled in their World Cup final defeat to Spain.
The defending champions were beaten 1-0 in New Jersey on Sunday and produced an appalling display that was low on quality and high on gamesmanship before losing their discipline completely at the final whistle with several members of their playing and coaching staff lashing out at the Spaniards as they celebrated.
Their defeat was met with relief and joy from most neutrals but Manchester United defender Martinez, who had to come off just before half-time due to injury, claims their detractors should give Argentina more credit.
Writing on Instagram, he said: “It is heartbreaking not to have brought home the trophy we all wanted, yet I am filled with immense pride – pride in this jersey, my team-mates, the coaching staff, the management, the medical team, the cooks, the kit men, and everyone involved in making this whole journey run as smoothly as possible. And, above all, pride in you – for sending us all your love and strength, for sharing that passion that defines us so well, and for the unity of a country – a unity I hope endures.
“I want to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title.
“To our people, I want to say that the result does not define the journey we took. We overcame adversity, made the impossible possible, and never sought excuses – we only found reasons to keep going. We defended our colours far beyond the pitch and shared unforgettable moments with the national team, alongside our families and with the unconditional support of all Argentines. It will always be a tremendous honour to represent you.
“Remember: ‘The fall of the greats is the joy of the mediocre.’ I love you, Argentina!”
Mac Allister thanks critics for providing Argentina with motivation
That defiance was echoed by Liverpool midfielder Mac Allister, who played the full 120 minutes at MetLife Stadium and produced a gritty display following the dismissal of Enzo Fernández.
Mac Allister said: “We were so close… that’s why it hurts so much. But no-one can take away everything we experienced during this World Cup. What they made us feel is extraordinary.
“We had to suffer, there were adversities, but we overcame them TOGETHER. Let’s never forget this, please: TOGETHER we are stronger than anyone.
“Let’s cry, because we’re Argentinians and we always want to win. But after crying, let’s get up, unite, and keep going, because this isn’t over. And these past few days, my mom reminded me of a popular saying: ‘If there’s a rematch, don’t be afraid.’
“Thank you to all Argentinians for every message of love and support. You don’t know how important you are on this journey. And thank you also to those from other countries who send us messages mocking or rejoicing in our pain.
“Without meaning to, you help us feel more and more proud to be Argentinian every day. THANK YOU ARGENTINA!”
