Atalanta v Bayern Munich: Line-ups, stats and preview for Champions League clash

Atalanta will hope to replicate their incredible win over Borussia Dortmund when they face another German club in the Champions League round of 16 tomorrow night.

It looked bleak for the Bergamo outfit when they lost the first leg of the play-offs 2-0 to Dortmund but a stirring comeback in the return, capped by Lazar Samardzic’s last-gasp penalty, saw them win 4-1 and set up a clash with German champions Bayern Munich.

Atalanta come into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw with Udinese at the weekend, Gianluca Scamacca scoring twice to rescue a point.

Coach Raffaele Palladino said: “The guys have heart and desire to show that they are a strong team, we want to be competitive on all fronts. Against Bayern Munich we have nothing to lose and we want to play well.”

Bayern are cruising to another Bundesliga crown having established an 11-point lead at the top of the table.

Friday’s 4-1 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach, a result achieved without the injured Harry Kane, came at a cost, though, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffering a calf strain that will keep him out of the trip to Italy. Jonas Urbig will deputise.

Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl said: “Jonas has really developed. In every game he has been called upon, he always performed in a stable and solid way.”

Eberl is not expecting an easy night against an Atalanta side that sit seventh in Serie A.

He added: “Atalanta is always one of the supposedly smaller teams in Italy in terms of name, but every year at the top – this year again. We know exactly what’s coming: a big task. We are the favourites, but you should never underestimate the underdog.”

Team news for Atalanta v Bayern Munich

The good news for Bayern is that star striker Harry Kane trained today after missing the Monchengladbach game with a minor injury. Eberl confirmed he will be in the starting XI tomorrow night.

Charles De Ketelaere is injured for the home side while Giorgio Scalvini is suspended. Ederson and Giacomo Raspadori are doubtful.

Prediction for Atalanta v Bayern Munich

Atalanta

2 2

Bayern Munich

We think Bayern will prevail over two legs but the first game in Bergamo could be a tight, but entertaining, affair.

Atalanta have goals in them while the likes of Kane and Luis Diaz will offer plenty going the other way.
