Mozambique v Cameroon preview
As well as their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) win, Mozambique’s reward for beating Gabon in their second match at the 2025 edition is a guaranteed place in the last 16 with a game to spare.
The team ranked 102nd in the world will face a tough last-16 game against Nigeria in Fez on Monday (19:00 GMT) unless they beat five-time champions Cameroon in their closing group-stage match, in which case they would meet South Africa, Burkina Faso or Sudan.
“This group deserves it,” said manager Chiquinho Conde, who oversaw a group-stage exit with a point at the 2023 finals.
“Wow – we have been through so many difficulties and so many adversities to arrive here and achieve something so great when people least expect it.”
Cameroon beat Gabon 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Ivory Coast, putting David Pagou’s team level on points and tiebreakers with the holders at the top of Group F.

“I must confess that I didn’t make any calculations,” said Pagou, who took over at the start of this month.
“We are in our own lane and we don’t know who is or is not coming [in the knockout stage]. We know Mozambique are a very complex and difficult team to play against.”
Mozambique v Cameroon: AFCON team news
Junior Tchamadeu struck the shot that looped off Ghislain Konan for an own goal to earn Cameroon a point against Ivory Coast, but the Stoke City right-back is suspended against Cameroon for accumulated bookings.
Pagou, who is without midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa for the tournament through injury, could rotate his side with the pressure to qualify off, as could counterpart Conde.
The former Mozambique striker, who played at three AFCON tournaments, brought in Faizal Bangal for Manuel Kambala in midfield and Domingues for Stanley Ratifo in attack against Gabon.
