Guadalajara v Barcelona: Line-ups, stats and preview

Preview for Guadalajara v Barcelona

Barcelona open the defence of their Copa del Rey crown at Guadalajara tomorrow night with boss Hansi Flick stressing the need for his players to show the right attitude against the third-tier club.

Barca have been in excellent form in recent weeks, winning seven of their last eight games in all competitions to establish a four-point lead at the top of La Liga.

A trip to Castilla La-Mancha ought to be formality with the home side struggling in their division but Flick is aware of the pitfalls that await against teams with nothing to lose.

He said: “It’s a game you have to win. We are favourites, but we have to be prepared and prove it on the field. Attitude is important and the players know it…how we start the game, how we are. These are the basics of this game.”

Barca overcame Osasuna at the weekend but were not at their sparkling best and their German boss is hoping for better tomorrow night.

“In the last four weeks, players have been returning and we have been able to see the quality of the team,” he added. “We have been making progress. Today I also talked to the players about what we can improve. We’re not done, we’re halfway there and we can do many things better. And that is our goal. We can improve and that is our goal until the end of the season.”

Guadalajara reached this stage of the competition with victories over Cacereno and Ceuta but those wins have made up two-thirds of their successes in the last 14 games.

The other came on December 7 when they beat Osasuna B 1-0 but they lost again at the weekend,  going down 3-1 to Real Madrid B.

Team News for Guadalajara v Barcelona

Flick will rotate his squad for this game and offer several fringe players the chance to impress. He also confirmed number one Joan García would be rested but refused to elaborate on who will step in between Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Wojciech Szczęsny. The German is favourite with Szczesny still recovering from a stomach upset.

Robert Lewandowski’s participation will be a game-time decision after he trained alone this morning. Gavi, Dani Olmo and Ronald Araujo are all sidelined.
