Detroit Lions @ Philadelphia Eagles preview

The Philadelphia Eagles (7-2) are aiming to extend their winning run to four games when the NFC East leaders host the Detroit Lions (6-3) at the Lincoln Financial Field in the NFL on Sunday, pitting two of the teams who had been expected to contest the NFC decider last season against each other.

Helped by three touchdowns by Jared Goff, the Lions followed up defeat with victory for the second time inside a month by beating the Washington Commanders 44-22 last Sunday, a day before the Eagles won 10-7 at the Green Bay Packers after neither team had scored by half-time, recording their lowest scoring output of the season.

“You have to have a sense of urgency and a mindset to put what you did the week before in the past, move on and try to improve,” said running back Saquon Barkley, adding that the Eagles would have similar discussions “no matter if we score 10 points or 40”.

“That’s just the nature of this business. You’re never going to play a perfect game. The defense came out and played big for us. We know we’ve got to improve.”

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith and running back Saquon Barkley celebrate a touchdown.

Tight end Sam LaPorta, who has completed 40 receptions, 489 receiving yards and three touchdowns this season, is out with a back injury for the Lions, and would-be replacement Brock Wright is among a long list of injury doubts alongside the likes of Taylor Decker, Amik Robertson, Jacob Saylors, Penei Sewell and Sione Vaki.

“Brock’s a guy we don’t talk a lot about but he’s the jack of all trades,” said Detroit head coach Dan Campbell.

“He does everything for us – pass protect, run block, he can run some routes, he plays special teams. He’s one of the most dependable players we have on this team.”

Wright has nine receptions this season for 71 yards with two touchdowns.
