Pep Guardiola: The numbers, the records and the silverware

Pep Guardiola enjoyed his 1000th game in management, his Manchester City side cruising to a hugely impressive 3-0 win against defending champions Liverpool yesterday.

It was a fitting way to reach the landmark for the most successful coach of his generation.

Guardiola’s influence stretches beyond silverware, however. You only have to watch a lower league game in England to see how teams try to play out from the back and implement a style of play that Guardiola may not have thought up but certainly employed with huge success.

He started out at Barcelona B before taking over the top job at Camp Nou in 2008. He joined Bayern Munich in 2013 before moving on to City in 2016.

Here, we break down Guardiola’s 1000 games by numbers:

Barcelona B was the foundation – Guardiola

Speaking after the win against Liverpool, Guardiola was asked about his achievement.

He told BBC MOTD: “Just want to say thank you to the players, backroom staff to give me that present. Proud to do it here in Manchester with my City.

“Now rest and come back with the energy.

“I think my period at Barcelona B is the foundation for many things. To realise myself that I was able to do it and learn a lot.

“I will never forget the guys in that first season. For me, it has been so special to make 1,000 games in front of my family and especially against Liverpool. I have a huge respect for that club.”
