Marseille vs Panathinaikos match preview

There was never likely to be very much to separate these two sides and, following last week’s first leg at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium, this tie is perfectly poised.

A week ago, the only goal of the night in Athens came with just seven minutes remaining; Brazilian winger Bernard (remember him?) snatching a crucial victory for Panathinaikos.

Given that OM had midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia sent off shortly after the hour mark, les Phocéens were probably relieved to only lost 1-0.

Panathinaikos are one of the great names of European football but, given their recent-history on the continent, or lack of it, victory in this tie would be an almighty achievement.

Before this season, the Greens hadn’t won a European tie since 2017 and have not featured in a UEFA group stage since 2016.

In the previous round, Ivan Jovanović’s team swatted aside Dnipro-1, so the Greek side are still dreaming of getting back into the Champions League for the first time since 2010.

So, will OM be able to overturn that narrow one-goal deficit at Stade Vélodrome?

The winners of this tie will take on Braga or TSC in the UEFA Champions League play-off round.

The losers drop into the UEFA Europa League group stages.
