Guardiola admits Man City players still angry at Monaco draw and backs Foden to make England comeback
The Cityzens dropped points in the Champions League in midweek thanks to a last-minute penalty
Pep Guardiola has revealed his Manchester City players are still fuming after they were denied a win at Monaco in midweek.
The Premier League side were held to a draw in their Champions League clash after Eric Dier was fouled in the box before converting in the final minutes, putting a dent in City’s good start to the European campaign.
Erling Haaland let loose in the media after the match, claiming he and his team-mates were “P*ssed off”, and that the standard of officiating was “Not good enough.”
And Guardiola, speaking ahead of City’s trip to Brentford, has backed his players up on the matter.
He said: “All of us we were (annoyed). We want to win but could not do it. We did many good things.
“There were ones we could do better. That’s a normal kind of process. I had a feeling but I know. We will have a look at the technology and work on it. Not a problem, I would say.
“I like when they are like this (frustrated). But my feeling about the team when it is bad, in front of you I don’t like to express. I like to have with me and with my team and my players in the basement. They know I don’t like to share it here.”
Foden will be back
Guardiola was also asked Phil Foden’s absence from the England squad for the upcoming matches against Wales and Latvia.
The established international has hit a rich vein of form recently, but was snubbed by head coach Thomas Tuchel as he continues to shape his squad for next year’s World Cup.
But Guardiola was not worried about his forward’s snub, claiming he will return to the Three Lions fold sooner rather than later.
He added: “Thomas [Tuchel] knows what he needs for a the national team a thousand time, million times, trillion times better than me.
“All I can say that if Phil continues playing like he is playing then he will be back.”
“I am happy that players go to the national team, but I am even more happy when they come back healthy, that’s for sure.
“Best player we have in small spaces in the final third, by far. How he times an attack and his desire to score a goal, he is the best one we have.”
