Frank labels Tottenham captain Romero ‘one of the best in the world’

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank believes his captain Cristian Romero is one of the best defenders in the world.

The Argentine World Cup winner signed a new contract after the Dane arrived, quashing rumours of a potential departure following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.

And he has since been named captain in the absence of Heung-Min Son, also leading Spurs to a positive 2025-26 campaign so far, with four wins in five matches.

As a result, he has earned the praise of Frank, who was seen embracing the defender after the 1-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League earlier on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of the Brighton game, Frank said: “I rate him super high. I think he is one of the best centre backs in the world and It helps when you’ve won a World Cup and the Europa League.

“The best perform week in, week out. I definitely see a more mature player and person, not that he hasn’t been that before. He’s aggressive when he needs to be, cool and composed when he needs to be.”

Frank taking it slow

Tottenham fans have been understandably delighted at the start under Frank, although some of the wins have not been glamorous, there is a newfound defensive stability that was not present under former boss Ange Postecoglou.

And it is something Frank is very much aware of, with the ex-Brentford coach admitting he is taking things one game at a time and will pay no attention to the table until next year.

He added: “I’ve looked a couple of times. I’m trying to focus on us and our performances. It is so easy to get drawn into something you can’t control.

“The fans can dream and hope. I also dream and hope but I’m a little closer to things so I need to stay level-headed.”
