Harvey Elliott to Aston Villa: Liverpool willing to sanction midfielder’s exit when Alexander Isak signs

Liverpool’s bid to sign Alexander Isak appears to have had a knock-on effect with midfielder Harvey Elliott in talks over a move to Aston Villa.

If the Premier League champions do conclude a deal to sign Isak for a British record £125million from Newcastle, it would allow Florian Wirtz to play as a conventional attacking midfielder, blocking the path for Elliott to feature under Arne Slot.

The England Under-21 star was named player of the tournament as Lee Carsley’s side retained their European Championship title this summer and it was expected he would leave Anfield in search of more regular first-team football.

Premier League the lure for Elliott

He was linked with RB Leipzig but Elliott’s preference was to remain in the Premier League.

Villa want to take the 22-year-old on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy next summer for a fee of £35million, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Villa have been forced to take a cautious approach in the market this window as they seek to remain within Profit and Sustainability parameters.

Deals for former loanee Marco Asensio and West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta were considered but a move for the younger Elliott appears a more sensible choice.

Villa off to a miserable start

Unai Emery is also expected to be handed Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United as he looks to arrest a disappointing start to the new Premier League season.

Last night’s 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace means Villa are yet to win, or score, this season.

Elliott joined Liverpool from Fulham in 2019 and has made 147 appearances, winning six trophies.
