Man United v Burnley match preview
After arguably the most embarrassing defeat in their history at fourth-tier Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, Manchester United may not relish the prospect of a home game against a Burnley team who conceded the fewest goals of any team in the top four divisions last season and are on a two-match winning run.
Scott Parker’s Premier League newcomers are entitled to feel precious little pressure compared to the torrent United are facing, and the former England international has reason to be optimistic after a “brilliant result” in beating Sunderland 2-0 at home last Saturday following a 3-0 defeat in their opener at Tottenham.
“There’s always noise around every team,” Parker replied when he was repeatedly asked about beleaguered United counterpart Ruben Amorim.
“There’s no doubt that, at this present moment, Man United and Amorim are in an uncomfortable place for them.

“We’re playing against a world-class team and, on their day, their players can produce bits which can cause you problems.
“I don’t want this to be emphasised around Man United… you need to bring a certain level to a game of football. Technically and tactically, you need to be on it as well.”
Aaron Ramsey scored the opener and Oliver Sonne netted the 91st-minute winner as Burnley beat second-tier Derby County 2-1 at home in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
“We’re in a really good place,” reflected Parker. “There’s still loads to improve with a very new squad.
“You’d like to press the fast-forward button with a click of the finger or a magic wand… that’s sometimes an unrealistic task. But I’m really pleased with how we are progressing.”
Cup calamities aside, United are yet to win in the league after a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal and 1-1 draw at Fulham. They could also be about to lose England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has requested a loan exit.
“Until it is official, I cannot say much,” Amorim said. “I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his place.
“We need Kobbie. I understand that the players who aren’t playing in this moment are disappointed. You have to fight during the week.”
Man United v Burnley team news
United centre-back Lisandro Martinez is recovering from a long-term knee injury but wideman Noussair Mazraoui could be close to a return.
Striker Benjamin Sesko made his first start in the defeat at Grimsby following the Slovenia international’s £74 million arrival from Leipzig.
Andre Onana replaced Altay Bayindir in goal at Blundell Park but the Turkiye international has been ever-present in the league so far.
Burnley centre-back Jordan Beyer, right-back Connor Roberts and midfielder Zeki Amdouni are out with knee injuries.
Winger Manuel Benson is recuperating from an Achilles tendon issue but new centre-back Bashir Humphreys started against Derby, as did forward Armando Broja.
“I’m pleased he got some minutes,” Parker said of Broja. “He’s not had a full pre-season and still needs some work to bring him up to speed.
“We’re going to tread carefully and get him to a level he needs to be at to operate at his best. I have absolutely no doubt that we have a very good player who can have a massive impact for us this year.”

Man United v Burnley prediction
If United’s desperation leaves them looking for omens, their seven-game unbeaten run against Burnley in all competitions and solitary defeat in 18 meetings between the teams could oblige.
United’s torpor, however, gives Burnley a presentable chance to achieve their third 1-1 draw in five editions of the fixture, including on their most recent visit to Old Trafford in April 2024, when Amdouni’s 87th-minute penalty earned a point.
