River Plate v Monterrey match preview
River Plate will qualify for the last 16 of the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup if they beat Monterrey in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The Argentinian side started their campaign with a 3-1 over Urawa in Seattle on Tuesday, when Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi and Maximiliano Meza scored their goals.
“We have to keep improving because, even though we won – which was the most important thing – there were nerves,” said manager Marcelo Gallardo.
“We did the job we had to do, which was to win and not suffer too much. We weren’t able to fully develop our fluidity in the game… [Urawa] didn’t come out after the [first] goal, either.
“They played the same way the entire match. They never let us create on the inside, and we only had the wings as an attacking option.”

Monterrey took the lead against Inter through legendary defender Sergio Ramos but Rayados were arguably fortunate only to concede once in their opening 1-1 draw.
“We’re very happy for the fans, who supported us and helped us a lot,” said coach Domenec Torrent, noting Monterrey’s strong showings in their previous appearances at the tournament.
“The support they give us is very important. I knew what our chances would be. We came close to scoring [again] and held off their attack.
“[We] never give up. We want to represent our fans well; we play for them. Rayados have something special: they thrive in major competitions.
“We came here to compete and try. When you’re at a club as big as Rayados, you’re going to compete. We want to be in the next qualifying round and the ones after that.”

Teenage sensation Franco Mastantuono, who will join Real Madrid after turning 18 in July, could start again for River Plate.
The playmaker is a central figure in the team’s attack as he looks to introduce himself to the world during his final matches with the club.
Driussi is out for the rest of the Club World Cup with an ankle injury and could be replaced from the start by his second-half replacement against Urawa, Miguel Borja.
Defender Carlos Salcedo and forward Agustin Ruberto are absent for Monterrey with long-term knee injuries.
