About Manchester City

Manchester City Football Club was founded in 1880, originally as St. Mark’s. The club adopted its current name in 1894.

Manchester City’s traditional colours are sky blue and white. The club’s crest is based on the city of Manchester’s coat of arms and features a golden eagle as well as the club’s motto, Superbia in Proelio (Pride in Battle).

The Citizens, as they are nicknamed, play their football at the 55,000-seater Etihad Stadium. The club’s biggest rivals are neighbours Manchester United. The Manchester Derby played between the two sides has grown in stature after the recent success City have achieved.

Throughout its history, the club has yo-yoed between the top two divisions in England, with the exception of the 1998-1999 season, when the club played in the third tier of English Football. Manchester City were one of the founding members of the inaugural Premier League season.

In August 2008 the club’s future was completely changed as they were bought by Abu Dhabi United Group; which would allow them to compete financially with the biggest club’s in Europe. By 2009 the club had splashed the cash on players like Robinho, Carlos Tevez, Kolo Toure, Emmanual Adebayor and others.

In the 2010-11 season the club won their first major honour under new ownership, winning the League Cup. The following season, the club won their first Premier League title and their first domestic league title since 1968. The title was won in the most dramatic of fashions. Level on points with Manchester United, City just needed to beat QPR at home to win the title. Somehow, City found themselves 2-1 down, with four minutes to go; seemingly putting the title in United’s hands. City managed to score two stoppage time goals, including a 94th minute winner from Sergio Aguero to win the League; one of the Premier League’s greatest ever moments.

Manchester City have won four League titles in their history, five FA Cups, three League Cups and four Community Shields, with six of those honours coming under their new ownership.

Les McDowell is the club’s longest-serving manager by games, managing 592. Roberto Mancini guided City to their first Premier League win, while their second was won under Manuel Pellegrini.
