Futbol Club Barcelona, or Barca for short, was founded in 1899 in Catalonia. The club has a rich history of success and is currently one of the biggest clubs in world football. The club’s motto Més que un club (Spanish for ‘more than a club’) is symbol of the club’s strong Catalan culture, which is an integral part of Barcelona’s identity.

Barca’s crest features the club’s colours of blue and red as well as the Catalonian flag and St. George’s Cross, in honour of their Catalonian and English founders.

Barcelona play their football at the gargantuan Camp Nou stadium, which is the largest in Europe. Opened in 1957, the stadium has an official capacity of 99,354 and has hosted two Champions League finals.

Barca have a notorious rivalry with fellow Spanish giants, Real Madrid. The match between the two is known as El Clasico and is often a fiery affair, both on and off the pitch. Locally, the club’s biggest rivals are Espanyol.

The club is one of the most successful of all time, having won a combined fifty La Liga and Copa del Rey titles. They also hold the record for most Spanish Super Cup wins. Barcelona have also won the European Cup on five occasions, adding to their eight other European trophies and two FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Barcelona has been home to some of the greatest footballers of all-time. Four-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi is the clubs’ all-time leading goalscorer with over 400 goals. World Cup winner Xavi Hernandez is the club’s leading appearance maker, with 505. In his 17 years with the club, Xavi won 25 major club titles. Just a few notable former players include Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Hristo Stoichkov, Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff.

The club has also had a number of world class managers, the most successful of which were Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola. The pair won 25 honours between them. Other notable managers include Frank Rijkaard, Louis van Gaal, Bobby Robson and Terry Venables.
