Valencia close the gap on Barca to 8 points after grilling Gijon; Villarreal beat Granada 3-1

Valencia 4 – Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Sofiane Feghouli struck a stunning volley and Jonas scored twice in added time as Valencia thumped struggling Sporting Gijon 4-0.

Villarreal 3 – Granada 1 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Villarreal took the lead after 16 minutes when Cani played in Marco Ruben who fired a powerful effort into the top corner. Granada levelled the match after 50 minutes when Inigo Lopez connected with a Martins cross to head his side back into the match. Villarreal did not have to wait long to regain the lead as Borja Valero ended a sweeping move with a cool finish. It was 3-1 after 73 minutes when the ball bounced in off Cesar to compound the away side’s misery.

Real Vallecano leapfrog Getafe after 2-0 win; Malaga mow down Mallorca

Rayo Vallecano 2 – Getafe 0 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Mich and Diego Costa were on target for Rayo.

Malaga 3 – Mallorca 1 (La Liga, February 12, 2012) Michael Pereira put the visitors ahead with the game less than four minutes old with a thunderous low free-kick, but Seba Fernandez equalised soon after for Malaga.  Jeremy Toulalan then put the hosts in front in the second half and Salomon Rondon extended his team’s advantage with 23 minutes remaining.

Osasuna stun Barcelona 3-2: Real Madrid set to go 10 points clear

Osasuna 3 – Barcelona 2 (La Liga, February 11, 2012) (Alternative highlights.) Barcelona went 1-0 down after only four minutes, Raul Garcia beat Carles Puyol to the ball and Dejan Lekic put Osasuna into a shock lead. Eighteen minutes later Osasuna (and Real Madrid) were in dreamland as Dejan Lekic made it 2-0. Six minutes after the break it looked like Barcelona would make a comeback when Alexis Sanchez halved the deficit but five minutes later Raul Garcia restored the two-goal deficit. With 17 minutes to go Cristian Tello pulled another back for Barcelona to leave the home side hanging on. In the dying seconds, Alexis Sanchez had a goal disallowed for the 3rd time in the match.

Betis beat Bilbao 2-1; Racing hold Atletico

Real Betis 2 – Athletic Bilbao 1 (La Liga, February 11, 2012) Ruben Castro produced a sublime finish to fire the hosts in front with only 10 minutes on the clock as he curled a first-time effort beyond Gorka Iraizoz from a tight angle on the left of the area. Bilbao were back on terms midway through the first period, with Javi Martinez heading home, only for the midfielder to be given his marching orders in the second period for a second bookable offence, with Nelson then emerging as the hero.

Racing Santander 0 – Atletico Madrid 0 (La Liga, February 11, 2012) Atletico Madrid passed up a host of good opportunities as  Santander clung on to claim for a point.

Barcelona set up a Copa Del Rey final with Bilbao

Barcelona 2 – Valencia 0 (Agg. 3-1) (Copa Del Rey semi-final 2nd leg, February 8, 2012) (Longer highlights.) Barcelona took 16 minutes before breaching the Valencia backline as Messi proved the architect with a raking 50-yard pass that Cesc Fabregas lobbed over the keeper to put the Catalans 2-1 up on aggregate. The match began to unravel for Valencia when Sofiane Feghouli saw red in the 77th for hitting out at Puyol, and Barcelona soon made their extra numbers count as a move involving Messi, Alexis and Cesc was finished off by Xavi Hernandez.

Bilbao score six as minnows Mirandes finally bow out the Copa Del Rey

Athletic Bilbao 6 – Mirandes 2 (Agg. 8-3) (Copa Del Rey semi-final 2nd leg, February 7, 2012) Iker Muniain, Markel Susaeta and Jon Aurtenetxe scored inside the opening 22 minutes at San Mames, quickly extinguishing any chance of another giant-killing feat from their plucky visitors.  Fernando Llorente scored twice in four second-half minutes, after Mirandes had pulled one back through defender Aitor Blanco, who also grabbed their second near the end.  Cesar Caneda put the ball in his own net two minutes from time as Bilbao, who have won the Cup 23 times, progressed 8-3 on aggregate.

Granada 2 – Malaga 1 (La Liga, February 6, 2012) Odion Ighalo headed Granada in front on on 57. A well worked move from Malaga saw Salomon Rondon equalise but Inigo Lopez won it late on after Caballero could only parry.
