Mallorca 3 - Almeria 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 8, 2009) Alhassane Keita tapped home the first before Ortiz equalised with a free-kick that gave Auoate no chance. Cleber Santana put Mallorca 2-1 up before the break and Fernando Varela sealed the win eleven minutes into the second period.

Sevilla 2 - Deportivo La Coruna 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) Sevilla’s Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano stuck a perfect free-kick on the half hour mark to take the lead over Deportivo La Coruna. Freddie Kanoute doubled the lead in the 39th minute. Omar Bravo scored a consolation for Depor.
Poli Ejido 3 - Espanyol 2 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) Moses Hurtado headed home a corner to give Espanyol the lead at Poli Ejido. But after the break Poli, who play in the third tier of the Spanish league, equalised when Jorge Molina scored from the spot before completing the comeback when Julio scored a second after good build up play. Back came Espanyol, Martinez equalising for the La Liga side with a curler. But Poli were not to be denied and Chico rifled a stunner into the top corner - a fitting goal to win any game.
Racing Santander 1 - Valencia 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) Valencia took the lead in the 37th minute when Santander’s Gonzalo Colsa glanced a header past his own goalkeeper. Ezequiel Garay then missed a 49th minute penalty for the hosts, before Mehdi Lacen levelled with a low free-kick which curled around the Valencia wall.
Sporting Gijon 3 - Valladolid 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) In the tie between Sporting Gijon and Valladolid, the hosts gained the advantage when David Barral found space in the box, striking the ball into the top corner. And it was 2-nil minutes later when Barral struck his second of the game with a tidy finish in the box. And Valladolid were dead and buried by halftime, Gonzalez Carmelo adding a third before the break. Fabian Cannobio scored a last minute consolation for Valladolid.
Real Union 0 - Real Betis 1 (Copa Del Rey, January 7, 2009) In the Copa Del Rey, Real Betis took an early lead at Real Union when Damia picked up the ball, burst forward into the box and slipped the ball into the far corner.

Atletico Madrid 1 - Barcelona 3 (Cope Del Rey, January 6, 2009) Leo Messi gave Barca the early lead at Atletico Madrid after receiving a beautiful pass in the build up from Danny Alves. And it was the same story after the break, Messi doubling Barca’s advantage from the penalty spot. Atletico pulled a goal back when Tomas Ujfalusi scored from a corner but ten minutes from time Messi completed his hat-trick after showing off supreme skill, to restore Barca’s two goal advantage.

Real Madrid 1 - Villarreal 0 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) Pepe had the first chance for Real Madrid against Villarreal, and Robben was unlucky to see a 25-yard shot strike the bar. Real’s pressure paid off when Arjen Robben cut in from the right, strode across the pitch and left rip with a beauty into the top corner. Casillas saved a Pires shot as the Yellow Submarine looked to level while at the other end Klaas Jan Huntelaar came close to scoring on his debut. (First half highlights here.) In the second half Casillas had to work a little harder to turn Llorente’s shot behind, and then Iker produced a brilliant stop to deny Rossi’s header.
Athletic Bilbao 1 - Espanyol 1 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) A near post header from Hurtado Moises gave Espanyol the lead at Bilbao. But with time running out in the second half, the hosts refused to let Espanyol clear their lines from a corner and Andoni Iraola popped up to score an overhead-kick to equalise.
Sevilla 1 - Osasuna 1 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) Jesus Navas struck a fine low drive from out the box to give Sevilla the lead but Walter Pandiani struck a last minute to earn Osasuna a draw.
Getafe 1 - Deportivo La Coruna 2 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) (Longer highlights here.) Depor striker Rodolfo Bodipo opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Manu del Moral brought Getafe level with an unstoppable effort, sending a left-footed volley into the far bottom corner of the net. But a late Sergio penalty kept up Depor’s recent good form to send them sixth.
Almeria 1 - Betis 0 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) Corona scored the game’s only goal in the 36th minute. The match was marred some what by red cards handed out to Almeria’s Kalu Uche and Sergio Garcia of Betis late on.
Malaga 1 - Sporting Gijon 0 (La Liga, January 4, 2009) Malaga move up to eighth thanks to Lolo’s strike in the 34th minute.

Barcelona 3 - Mallorca 1 (La Liga, January 3, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) With Lionel Messi sat next to Argentinean manager Diego Maradona in the stands, Aritz Aduriz gave the visitors a 15th minute lead with a sweet chip over Valdes, but Thierry Henry equalised just after the half hour mark for Barca. With 15 minutes remaining Andres Iniesta put Barca in the lead and Yaya Toure sealed the win with a late third. (First half highlights here, second half highlights here.)
Valencia 3 - Atletico Madrid 1 (La Liga, January 3, 2008) Valencia won a very soft penalty that David Villa slotted home and David Silva doubled the lead after running untracked into the box. But Atletico got a foothold in the game on the stroke of halftime when Diego Forlan scored a penalty for the visitors. After the break David Silva restored Valencia’s two goal cushion with a superb strike from 25-yards out.

Villareal 1 - Barcelona 2 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Minutes after the half-time break Cani put Villareal in front finishing a superb through ball from Rossi. But Barca hit back through Seydou Keita who headed in from an Alves cross and then eight minutes later Thierry Henry put the Catalans in front, volleying home after good work by Xavi. Barca played out the latter stages with ten men after Gerard Pique had been sent off for two yellow cards.
Mallorca 0 - Sevilla 0 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) The goalless draw sent Sevilla into second place.
Racing Santander 1 - Malaga 1 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Nabil Baha fired Malaga in the lead with a superb volley on the ran at Racing Santander. Esprin levelled for the hosts with a header.
Sporting Gijon 1 - Almeria 0 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Sporting Gijon’s centre forward Francisco Maldonado steered in a header to give the hosts the lead over Almeria.
Osasuna 5 - Getafe 2 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Jaroslav Palsil opened the scoring just seven minutes in, and Juanfran doubled Osasuna’s advantage on the half-hour. Then a quick-fire double just before the break from Walter Pandiani and Javed Nekounam virtually sealed the win.Roberto Soldado fired a late brace for Getafe, but that sandwiched an effort from Hector Font, who had grabbed Osasuna’s fifth.
Deportivo La Coruna 4 - Recreativo Huelva 1 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Alberto Lopo opened the scoring after 10 minutes and not long after Sergio’s penalty doubled their advantage. Another penalty moments later from Adrian Colunga gave Recre some hope, but Deportivo were soon back in control as Rodolfo Bodipo headed home. The scoring was completed in the final minute as Luis Felipe fired home.
Numancia 4 - Valladolid 3 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Jose Javier Barkero had earlier given Numancia the lead but goals from Goitom and Angel Vivar Dorado either side of half-time put Valladolid in the ascendancy. Henok Goitom put the visitors further ahead with less than 15 minutes remaining but late goals from Javier Gonzalez Del Pino, Carlos Reina Aranda and Gorka Brit turned the result on its head as Numancia came back to win.
Real Betis 0 - Athletic Bilbao 1 (La Liga, December 21, 2008) Javi Martinez headed the winner for Bilbao.
