The USA will take on the Netherlands in the first round of 16 game at the Qatar 2022 World Cup this Saturday as the Dutch come into this battle as the clear favourites to advance with the U.S just about edging into this stage with a narrow win over Iran.
Despite only beating Iran by the one goal, the USA did manage to go through all three group games without conceding a goal from open play. Only a Gareth Bale penalty for Wales in the opening game broke the backline of the USA and it was Christian Pulisic who ended up being the difference in the attack for his country, as was predicted.
The Chelsea star scored against Iran to give them a 1-0 win and send them through into the knockout rounds. Pulisic also assisted Timothy Weah’s goal against Wales, and he has now been involved in their two goals this campaign.
Cody Gakpo has been the hero for the Netherlands, however, scoring in every game and bringing himself level with a few others on three goals in the race for the Golden Boot. Frenkie de Jong in midfield and Virgil van Dijk at the back have also been huge for the Netherlands, and they should find themselves in a fairly comfortable position in this match.
This is also the Netherlands’ first time to head into the quarter-finals in eight years and the USA’s first time since 2002.
