New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto hit his first two home runs at Citi Field as a member of the Mets in the team’s 4-2 home loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“It feels good always to come through to help the team,” he said during a postgame interview. “It just feels good.”
Facing a 0-1 pitch count in the bottom of the sixth inning, Soto hit a 391-foot home run to cut the Diamondbacks’ lead to 2-1. Two innings later, he hit another home run – a 399-footer – to make it a 3-2 game.
“It’s always good to see it,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza in a postgame interview. “We knew he was close… Yeah, he’s hitting balls in the ground. But now, finally, he’s not only hitting balls in the air, but when he’s going in that direction – left center – he’s a pretty dangerous hitter. It was good to see that today.”

Prior to yesterday, Soto had only hit three home runs in the Mets’ first 31 games, all of which came on the road. His two home runs yesterday matched his total from April.
“When I’m hitting the ball well that way, I feel things are starting to get better for me on the plate,” Soto said. “I start seeing the ball better and deeper. It’s a good sign.”
Despite hitting two home runs, it wasn’t enough to lift the Mets over the Diamondbacks, who are 2-1 at Citi Field so far this season.
“I don’t have any pressure,” he explained. “These guys [and] Mendoza have been really clear with me, to make me feel comfortable going out there and playing. I don’t have any pressure at all. It’s just two homers that weren’t enough to get the win, so whatever.”

Despite the loss, the Mets are 13-3 at home, which is currently tied with the Detroit Tigers for the second-highest home winning percentage in baseball.
“I will sign up for it,” Mendoza said. “You hate to lose a series here at home. I also understand that’s going to happen. We’ve been playing pretty well… You date it all the way back to August from last year. That’s pretty good.”
“I feel like we’ve been doing a really good job,” Soto said. “We gotta give credit to our bullpen and starting pitching. They’ve been great… They’ve been showing up every day day in, day out since day one. [I’m] really happy [and] really excited to play behind those guys.”
Now that the homestand is in the books, the Mets are traveling to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals to open up a six-game road trip.
