One of the continent’s most in-form sides are back in action this weekend in Serie A as Atalanta look to stomp their marker down on the race for the Champions League when they meet with a Sampdoria side still in deep trouble.

Atalanta have been sensational over the past few games after looking like being in a bit of trouble just before and just after the World Cup. Now, however, the Bergamo outfit have returned to their former goalscoring glory in stunning style.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men edged past Bologna earlier in January before hammering Salernitana 8-2 in what was their greatest-ever Serie A result in terms of goals. Gasperini saw his side then smash Spezia 5-1 in the Coppa Italia.

Last time out, Atalanta had a great chance to rub salt in the wounds of Juventus, as Ademola Lookman continued his stunning goalscoring form with two goals to make it 11 in Serie A and put him just behind Victor Osimhen in the race for the top scorer award.

The game finished 3-3 after a goal from Joakim Maehle as well, and the Bergamo outfit are now in sixth and behind second-placed AC Milan by three points.

Sampdoria remain in the relegation spots after another loss. Empoli beat them 1-0 to keep them in 19th, and they are beginning to look destined for Serie B.
