Partick Thistle vs Ayr United match preview

Who will move one step closer to a place in the Scottish Premiership?

Having finished fourth in the Championship, Partick Thistle have already come through a two-legged tie just to get this far, but made light work of Queen’s Park.

Following a thrilling 4-3 victory at home, Kris Doolan’s team enjoyed a thumping 4-0 second leg win at Ochilview last Friday night.

Brian Graham, Scott Tiffoney, Kevin Holt and Danny Mullen the scorers.

The Jags are aiming to return to the top division for the first time since 2018, actually dropping into League One in the intervening years.

Since the Premiership play-offs were introduced in 2014, no club has ever gained promotion having began their campaign in the quarter-finals.

Ayr United meantime were last in action a fortnight ago, snatching second spot on the final day by beating Inverness Caley Thistle 2-1.

Mark McKenzie’s 88th minute winner in the Highlands making all the difference.

The Honest Men have not competed in Scotland’s top-flight since 1978, relegated alongwith Clydebank back then.

Now though, having guided Ayr to their highest finish for 22 years, Lee Bullen’s men are dreaming of promotion.

These two clubs met four times during the season, with Partick Thistle claiming two wins, Ayr victorious once, while their most-recent clash in April produced a 1-1 draw.

Whoever progresses through this tie will face the 11th-place finisher from the Premiership in the final, and this’ll be either Ross County, Kilmarnock or Dundee United.

Will either establish a first leg lead at Firhill?
