Motherwell vs Hibernian match preview

Hibernian’s busy schedule continues.

This’ll be Hibs’ fifth match of the campaign already, having kicked off the new Premiership season with a 3-2 home defeat against St Mirren a week ago.

The Buddies raced into a 2-0 lead early at Easter Road, before Adam Le Fondre and Christian Doidge pulled it back to 2-2 but, just as the Hibees pushed for a winner, St Mirren snatched the points in stoppage time.

Meantime, Lee Johnson’s side have been juggling European commitments, first smashing Inter Club d’Escaldes in the Europa Conference League, despite embarrassingly losing the first leg 2-1 in Andorra la Vella.

The difficulty level then increased exponentially on Thursday, as Hibs welcomed Luzern to Leith.

Joe Newell broke the deadlock just 45 seconds after half time, his shot from the edge of the area arrowing into the top corner, only for the Swiss visitors to equalise from a corner soon after.

3-1 it finished and, ahead of Thursday’s return leg at Swissporarena, how crucial will that third goal prove to be, as Hibs seek to set up a glamour play-off round tie against Aston Villa?

Before then, can Hibernian put their first Premiership points on the board?

Motherwell meantime drew 1-1 with newly-promoted Dundee at Dens Park on the opening day, with new signing Theo Bair breaking the deadlock with a smart finish.

Since Stuart Kettlewell took over as manager in February, the Well have lost just two of 19 matches in league and cup so, against a fatigued Hibs side, a home win seems likely at Fir Park.
