Betting prediction: Newcastle United 1 – 3 Leeds United

Newcastle United welcomes Leeds to St James’ Park on Friday for this Premier League match.

The Magpies have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 11 wins to Leeds United’s 7, from their 24 encounters in the Premier League. However, Leeds are unbeaten in the last 3 matches in this head-to-head in all competitions. ‎The Whites also completed a league double over Newcastle last season. This includes a 1-2 win on their last visit to St James’ Park.

This is also one of the few fixtures in which both teams tend to perform better away than at home. Leeds have 4 wins here in the Premier League compared to just 3 at Elland Road. Newcastle likewise are better on the road with 6 Premier League wins in Leeds compared to just 5 here in this head-to-head.

2-0 Newcastle win. Newcastle’s last home victory over Leeds came back in 2013 in the League Cup 3rd Round, by a 2-0 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Friday is available at odds of 19/1.

1-1 draw. The last time these sides met outside the Premier League, the match finished in a 1-1 draw back in 2017 in England’s 2nd tier, the Championship. Odds of 7.5/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

Over 2.5 goals. Both matches between these sides last season finished with over 2.5 goals, an average of 5 goals per game. This continues a trend in the Premier League with 10 of the last 12 games stretching back to the 1999/00 season finishing as over 2.5 goal games. You can back another high scoring game here on Friday with odds of 1.66/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Jack Harrison Goalscorer. Jack Harrison (above) got on the scoresheet in both games against Newcastle last season. The former England Under-21 international is 4.33/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Newcastle.

Both goals last season marked the final one of the game, Harrison scoring the 5th in a 5-2 win in Leeds and the winning goal in a 1-2 victory here. The winger is 12/1 to score the last goal of the game on Friday again.

Newcastle United vs Leeds United: Match preview

Friday Night Football in the Premier League this weekend brings us a perfect chance to see how individual play fares against an organised system.

Steve Bruce is very much a defence-first coach. He organises his team into two flat lines across the pitch and expects them to play deep, keep their shape and structure, remain disciplined and repel the opponents’ attacks. The Testudo formation of football if you will.

Each individual is part of a unit that is stronger than the sum of its parts. Its downfall though is when one unit gets pulled out of formation, it creates a hole. In trying to fill it, this creates movement in the defensive shape and therefore space to be exploited.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds look perfectly suited to pulling the formation apart and exploiting the space. Bielsa is very much an attack-first coach. His focus is on patterns of play on the ball. Movements to create space. Runners from deep and 3rd man runners to drag and distract defenders long enough for space to be created and exploited.

To play in such a way means that your own system will rarely keep its shape and structure as your players by design want to be moving and popping up in unexpected positions. Bielsa’s solution to this is a man-to-man approach when the ball is lost which is a throw-back to 1980’s era football.

Whoever is nearest the ball quickly presses it. The next two nearest close the best passing options and mark players with their covering shadows. The rest pick up and track opponents in a man-marking approach behind the ball.

Of course, the flaw in this is the whole defensive system collapses should one player get taken out of the game by a run or piece of skill by one player. If your full-back gets stood up and beaten with the ball on the flank then someone has to leave their man to deal with the ball. This can create a cascade effect in your defence as the opponent will always have a free man until you can reset and recover.

In Allan Saint-Maximin, Newcastle possesses probably the best example in the Premier League (since Eden Hazard left Chelsea and Jack Grealish left Villa) of an unpredictable individual whom the entire attacking system is built upon.

With containment-type coaching, it is often left up to individuals to carry the attacking burden of the whole team, and it appears one that Saint-Maximum and Callum Wilson are more than happy to bear the weight of.

What will win out on the day, though? Individualistic attacking versus individual responsibility in defence. Or a well-drilled attacking system versus Bruce’s Testudo? Our money is on Bielsa-ball just like last season.

Newcastle United team news vs Leeds United

Martin Dubravka remains ruled out with an ankle injury. He looks likely to be out until November due to an infection setting him back further.

However, Karl Darlow was on the bench for last weekend’s 4-1 defeat against Manchester United. After a disastrous showing from Freddie Woodman, it is expected that we will see a return for Darlow here.

Elliott Anderson and Jonjo Shelvey (pictured above) remain ruled out with hip and calf injuries respectively.

Paul Dummett is nearing a return to play, though, having returned to training before the international break.

Ryan Fraser was pictured on crutches recently. Thankfully he has only twisted his ankle and was using crutches to keep his weight off of it. He is rated at 50/50 to be involved here but if not, should be back before the end of the month.

Joseph Willock, Javier Manquillo and Ciaran Clark all picked up knocks against Manchester United. The trio face a late fitness test to be involved here.

Leeds United team news vs Newcastle United

The big news following last weekend was the sending off of Pascal Struijk after his lunging tackle on Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott left the young midfielder with an ankle fracture-dislocation. The tackle was deemed out of control under the laws of the game resulting in a straight red card. Leeds’ appeal of the decision was rejected and Pascal will now miss the club’s next 3 league games.

Diego Llorente is another who didn’t complete the match against Liverpool. He was withdrawn midway through the first half with a suspected hamstring injury. While the grade of the injury hasn’t yet been determined, he will certainly miss out here.

Robin Koch (pictured above) has missed Leeds’ last 3 games with a pelvic injury. No time frame has been provided yet for his return.

This leaves Marcelo Bielsa short in numbers in defence. Teenager Charlie Cresswell could start here as a result. Or Bielsa may opt for Luke Ayling to move to central defence with Stuart Dallas covering at right-back as he did against Everton earlier this season. Mateusz Klich would be the most likely candidate to step into Dallas’ place in midfield.

Daniel James made his Leeds debut at the weekend as a second-half substitute. The young winger, signed for over £26m from Manchester United, could be in line for a full debut here, replacing Jack Harrison.
