Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers – Preview, predictions and odds
Find out all the best odds, picks, and predictions in an NFL Week 1 match preview between Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, with in-depth analysis and the latest stats.
The Green Bay Packers open their 2025 season at Lambeau Field with a mouthwatering NFC North clash against the Detroit Lions, with both teams holding Super Bowl aspirations.
Green Bay lost in the Wild Card Round last season as the Packers were beaten by the eventual Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions were the one seed in the NFC, but went one-and-done as they were stunningly blown out at home by the Washington Commanders.
Both teams once again face the challenge of coming through the gauntlet of the NFC North, which has an extremely strong case for being the best division in football.
Yet Detroit head coach Dan Campbell is relishing playing at the league’s most historic stadium, a place where the Lions have claimed victory in each of the last three seasons.
“I love Lambeau,” Campbell said on Tuesday. “It’s awesome. That’s just, that’s one of those places, on the eighth day, the good Lord made Lambeau and so we can go out there and play in it.”
The task of the Lions continuing that streak was made more difficult last week when the Packers struck a stunning trade with the Dallas Cowboys for edge rusher Micah Parsons.
Green Bay’s acquisition of the four-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro is seen as a move that could put the Packers over the top in their quest to avoid yet more playoff heartbreak and win the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2010 season.
It remains to be seen in what capacity and how many snaps Parsons will play Week 1, but a potential battle with Lions right tackle Penei Sewell is a true heavyweight clash that could have an outsized impact on the outcome.
The Lions cannot afford to have Parsons and the Green Bay defense derail their high-powered offense, but the Packers will also have concerns about going against a stud pass rusher, with Aidan Hutchinson set to make his return for Detroit.
Hutchinson was putting together a Defensive Player of the Year resume when he fractured his tibia and fibula in a win over the Cowboys last October, his season-ending injury the biggest in a series of blows suffered by Detroit last year that meant the Lions were ill-equipped to slow down Washington in the postseason.
The unknown for the Lions surrounds how long it will take Hutchinson to knock the rust off and get back to his best. There is talent across the Detroit secondary but, for the Lions to be in the best position to slow down Jordan Love and a group of playmakers to which the Packers have added first-round pick Matthew Golden, Hutchinson may need to immediately pick up where he left off before his cruel setback.

Prediction for Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers
There’s a feel-good factor around Green Bay following the Parsons trade, with the Packers likely hoping his arrival can mask some clear issues in their secondary.
Yet both these teams have offensive lines well-equipped to keep their quarterbacks clean consistently regardless of the talent of opposing pass rushers. When the pressure does come, Love has more tools in his locker as a quarterback to negate it than Jared Goff, so the edge goes to Green Bay in what should be a Week 1 thriller.
Prediction: Packers 33-30 Lions
