Preview for Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers (8-3-1) host the Chicago Bears (9-3) at Lambeau Field on Sunday in one of the most important games in the modern history of their rivalry.
No two NFL teams have faced each other more often than the Bears and Packers in the league’s 105-year history, with the two teams doing battle 208 times in the regular season.
The Packers lead the all-time regular-season series 107-95-6, and it is they who have dominated the rivalry in the 21st century, with the Bears’ win at Lambeau last season snapping an 11-game losing streak against Green Bay for Chicago.
Yet the Bears were simply playing the role of spoiler in that Week 18 game back in January. Having already been eliminated from the playoffs, Chicago’s win on a last-second field goal knocked the Packers down to the seven seed, leaving them facing a road game with eventual Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles.
This time there is a lot more at stake. Revitalised under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears hold the one seed in the NFC following their stunning road win over the Eagles last Friday. However, the Packers would leapfrog them into first place in the NFC North by following up their Thanksgiving defeat of the Detroit Lions by seeing off Chicago.
Jordan Love threw four touchdowns in an outstanding offensive display from the Packers, though they are likely to face a sterner test from a Chicago defense that had no problem slowing down the Eagles’ struggling attack.
The Bears have a league-leading 25 turnovers on defense this season, with 17 coming off interceptions.
Love has thrown just three interceptions all season and has gone four successive games without a pick, and he knows taking care of the ball will be paramount again if the Packers are to prevail.
“It’s something that we’ve harped on all season, so we’ve got to go out there and do a great job of just protecting the ball,” Love said.
“And that’s everybody. That’s me, the receivers, the running back, tight ends – anybody that’s carrying the ball.”
While Johnson has done a superb job putting Bears quarterback Caleb Williams in a position to succeed, the head coach and offensive play-caller will have his hands full with a Green Bay defense led by superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons, who has 12.5 sacks following his stunning trade from the Dallas Cowboys in August.
“Personnel-wise, they’re pretty loaded across the board,” Johnson said. “You’ve got multiple guys up front that you have to be aware of. Starting with Micah doing a great job moving around, so it’s hard to get a beat for where he’s going to be. Rashan Gary’s still playing at a high level, and then they’ve got a lot of depth up there too. But you can tell they’re really well coached.
“They do a great job shedding blocks on their front line with the linebackers. Lot of respect for Quay Walker, he has been doing it at a high level now for a number of years. And [Edgerrin] Cooper, I don’t think that he was healthy when I was calling games last year against them, but he shows up all over the tape. He’s flying around. They are matchup issues for your backs and pass pro. You can tell they bring it. Fast players sideline to sideline.
“And then, I think the safeties are probably the two best safeties that we’ve seen all year long. They’re extremely active in the run game. They’re all over the field and so we’ve got a tall task here at hand.
“”It might be the best defense we’ve seen all year. So, all hands on deck. It’s going to take all three phases for us here this week.”

Chicago Bears
The Bears’ win over the Eagles was extremely impressive, but the Packers figure to present a greater challenge, and it’s tough to see Chicago slowing down Jordan Love and Co. enough to prevail at Lambeau.
