Graham Potter drops Chelsea transfer hint ahead of January

Graham Potter has been discussing Chelsea’s plans for the January transfer window.

Chelsea had an active 2022 summer deadline day that included Marcos Alonso making the switch to FC Barcelona.

On the incoming front, meanwhile, Denis Zakaria joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a permanent switch from FC Barcelona.

Chelsea also signed Wesley Fofana Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Gabriel Slonina and Cesare Casadei this summer.

All of those signings meant that Chelsea spent the most money of any club in Premier League history during the 2022 summer transfer window, with a total spend of £278.4m.

Despite the heavy summer spend, though, Graham Potter has suggested that the Blues will look to buy more players this winter as well:

“Yes. I’m pretty sure we will [have dialogue],” he added. “We have regular dialogue so that’s part of an ongoing process.

“Sometimes you need to reflect, to think, to analyse and if you have the space to do it, it’s better. But we need to think about what’s happened and what we need to do to improve.”

But that is not not to say that Potter will push for new signings: “Not necessarily. I think there is more to come from the team we have, more to come from the group we have.

“We’ve got some key players out: Kante, Chilwell, James, Fofana. These are key players and a couple of them are replacing key players that left in the summer.

“So the point for me is that we can do better than we have. From a performance perspective, I think the team can function better and that is where my focus is on.”
