A fresh update on Arsenal’s hunt for a new striker has emerged this week.
The Gunners currently have just Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as senior centre-forward options.
The pair have scored just four league goals between them in 2021/22, only two of which have come from open play. Both Lacazette and Nketiah are out of contract this summer as well, meaning Arsenal risk starting 2022/23 with Folarin Balogun as their only natural striker.
Now though, reports coming out of Italy claim that have ‘stepped forward’ for Argentine international and Inter Milan star, Lautaro Martinez.
Arsenal have been linked with Martinez in the past – as have Tottenham – but the Gunners look set to reignite their transfer interest ahead of the upcoming window.
No transfer fee is mentioned in the report.
Martinez’s Inter stint
This comes after Inter Milan snapped the 24-year-old up from Argentinian outfit Racing Club for a fee believed to be around £22.5m.
And, despite having had zero experience in Europe before making the move to Inter, Martinez took to the Italian top-flight like a duck to water.
The 2019/20 campaign saw the 24-year-old go from strength to strength under the guidance of Antonio Conte. In 35 league outings that season, Martinez netted 14 and assisted five.
He then scored 17 and assisted 10 in 38 Serie A ties last term as Inter ended Juventus’ reign of dominance over the Italian top-flight.
And though he saw strike partner Romelu Lukaku depart over the summer of 2021, Martinez has nevertheless been able to net 15 and assist three in 29 league outings thus far this season.
