Mets star Pete Alonso reportedly finalising five-year, $155million deal with Orioles

Pete Alonso is reportedly finalising a blockbuster $155million deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

A five-time All-Star with the Mets, Alonso was unsurprisingly the subject of interest from a host of teams during the MLB Winter Meetings.

But it is the Orioles, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who have won the race to add him to their lineup, doing so a day after missing out on Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber.

Pete Alonso makes MLB history with Orioles contract

Alonso will receive a deal that is the largest for a first baseman by the average annual value of the contract, with the contract paying him $31m a year.

The deal reportedly contains a limited no-trade clause and does not feature any opt-outs.

Alonso led MLB in home runs in his rookie season with the Mets, hitting 53.

While he has not matched that tally since, Alonso posted the best batting average (.272) of his career last season, a year in which he also topped 100 RBI for the second time. He tallied 126 RBI in 2025, five fewer than when he led the National League with 131.

A Silver Slugger Award winner in 2025 for the first time in his career, Alonso will hope to propel the Orioles back into World Series contention after they missed the playoffs last season with a 75-87 record. Baltimore had previously reached the American League Division Series in 2023 and the Wild Card in 2024.

The Mets made the playoffs just twice in Alonso’s seven seasons at Citi Field, progressing all the way to the National League Championship Series in 2024, only to lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.

Alonso’s departure is another key blow for the Mets, who had already seen star relief pitcher Edwin Diaz opt out of his contract before signing a three-year deal with the Dodgers on Tuesday.
