Gary Neville after Everton 2 – Tottenham 6
Following Tottenham’s amazing 6-2 win at Everton on Sunday, Gary Neville recorded his latest podcast for Sky Sports.
How good can this Christmas be for Spurs?
Gary Neville noted that Tottenham now have “three winnable games” over the festive period.
Tottenham are home to Bournemouth on Boxing Day, before Wolves come to Wembley on December 29. Spurs then face Cardiff in Wales on New Year’s Day.
For the record, Liverpool are top with 48 points. Man City are second with 44 points. Tottenham are third with 42 points.
Title race: It’s Man City vs Liverpool, not Spurs
Yet, when it comes to looking at winning the Premier League title, Gary Neville still doesn’t believe Tottenham can do it.
Why? Because Man City and Liverpool are just that much better than Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Neville said:
(Tottenham) are a team good enough to win the league. The problem is that there are two teams above them who are exceptional and better.
When the Champions League kicks in, the depths and quality in the squads of Liverpool and Man City – and I do believe that the first eleven of Liverpool and City – are a touch better than this Tottenham team.
Tottenham compared to Chelsea
Hammering home his point about this season’s title race, Neville compared Tottenham to Chelsea.
Chelsea lost 1-0 at home to Leicester on Saturday to likely end their hopes of winning the league.
Neville voiced his belief that he never really thought Chelsea could challenge Liverpool or Man City:
From the moment, I watched Chelsea against West Ham, I wasn’t convinced.
When people said ‘Chelsea can win the league’, I wasn’t convinced.
There was something not right about them with the team.
I think where Chelsea is at is good. Sarri is doing a good job.
They’re settling back into where I thought they would be which is challenging for the Champions League and certainly not contenders for the title.
Mauricio Pochettino & Manchester United
In the final part of the podcast, Neville turned attention to Manchester United.
Man United beat Cardiff 5-1 away on Saturday in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match in charge of the club.
Looking at the bigger picture at Old Trafford, Neville once again discussed why Tottenham’s Pochettino is the right person to be Man United’s next full-time manager.
To the chagrin of Spurs fans, Neville said:
I said Mauricio Pochettino would be the ideal candidate for Manchester United. I know Tottenham fans did not appreciate my intervention.
(Pochettino) gets the best out of young players. He gives young players an opportunity. He plays sensational football.
What I’ve never said this week is that Mauricio Pochettino should leave Tottenham.
