Manchester United were not Cristiano Ronaldo’s first choice when leaving Juventus

It has been revealed that Manchester United was not Cristiano Ronaldo’s first choice when leaving Juventus over the summer.

This is fairly easy to believe as Ronaldo did not re-join United until late in the summer transfer window and only seemed open to returning after many former teammates, and Sir Alex Ferguson, reached out to him when it was looking as though he could join Manchester City.

And now, journalist Guillem Balague has revealed that Manchester City was the preferred choice of both CR7 and his agent:

Has Cristiano Ronaldo played his last Champions League game?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to return to Manchester United looks to have been a poor one for all involved.

On Ronaldo’s part, he is wasting the final years of his career on a side experiencing a continued downward spiral no matter which players they bring in.

Of course, this could change next season when Manchester United finally appoint a new boss. However, it does not look as though that boss, nor Ronaldo, will be plying their trade in the Champions League in 2022/23.

The Red Devils were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. And with United currently a point behind Arsenal – who have three games in hand – in the Premier League, it is hard to see Ralf Rangnick and co. securing 4th spot this term.

And as Ronaldo will be 38 next year, perhaps it will be his final season at the top level and one, if he stays at United, that will not involve Champions League football.
