Kane makes Euro 2024 fitness pledge

England skipper says missing Bayern Munich season finale with back problems was precautionary

England's Harry Kane

Harry Kane insists he will be 100% for the Euros, despite having missed the end of Bayern Munich’s season with back problems.

The England captain was substituted late in his side’s agonising Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid on May 8 and missed the final two games of the Bundesliga season.

The 30-year-old however came off the bench just after the hour in England’s 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia at St James’ Park on Monday night and bagged his 63rd goal for his country on his 90th appearance, taking him past iconic Brazil striker Ronaldo.

It was just Kane’s fifth goal as a substitute for England and made it a dozen goals in his last dozen international appearances, with manager Gareth Southgate later revealing the former Tottenham striker will start Friday’s friendly against Iceland at Wembley.

Kane told Channel 4: “I’m feeling good. A lot of the end of season was precaution. It was a good chance to get a good break at the end of the season. I feel fine. I’m sure I’ll get some minutes on Friday.

“It’s always worked in my favour, it’s about getting minutes. I’m not someone who takes too long to get sharp.”

Kane paid tribute to Cole Palmer who netted his first England goal on his first start – though it later emerged he had asked Southgate to bring him on to take the spot-kick ahead of Palmer.

Kane said: “For him to do what he’s done in his first season, credit to him. Delighted for his goal. Going to need all players to chip in with goals throughout this tournament.

Palmer admitted: “It’s a great feeling, my first goal for my country. When it went in, I was buzzing.

“I hope (I’ve done enough to make the squad). Tonight wasn’t my best game, finding my feet on my first start but hopefully, I’ve done enough.”
