Jurgen Klopp’s assistant backs Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold to be future captain

Jurgen Klopp’s assistant backs Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold to be future captain

Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool stint

For several years now Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of the brightest young defenders in world football.

Despite still only being 22, Trent has played key roles in Liverpool winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

In 2019/20, for example, Trent would provide a staggering 13 assists in the league, which saw him etch his name into the history books for the most assists by a defender in a single PL campaign.

He will also go down in Liverpool’s history for his ‘corner taken quickly’ vs FC Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League:

Lijnders praise Trent Alexander-Arnold

And whilst Alexander-Arnold was not at his best last season, he still provided two goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Liverpool’s defence should also be a lot less hampered by injuries in 2021/22, so expect to see TAA back to his scintillating best in the next few months.

One man who is certainly expecting big things from Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool’s assistant coach, Pepijn Lijnders.

When writing for Liverpool’s official website recently, Lijnders was full of praise for Trent and even backed him to become a future captain:

I’m so proud of Trent. He was this natural technical talent when he was just 15 years old. He had all the characteristics I loved: a mentality to win, passionate to improve but his emotions sometimes took control instead of him taking control over the emotions. He trained with so much power and competition.

He grew step by step into the wonderful guy he is now, surrounded by a lovely family, he created this superb personality.

He has this aggression in a positive way. If someone represents this quote of Bill Shankly it’s him: playing at the highest level isn’t pressure, it’s a reward. I still see the same fire in his eyes in each training, but I don’t see this young guy anymore; I see a leader, I see someone who controls his emotions, a future captain.

A leader by example. The best clubs have one thing in common, a ‘one club’ mentality. The culture spreads through all departments. It’s great that our talents, the real ones, can make these steps together with our team.
