Frank Lampard confirms N’Golo Kante picked up fresh injury vs Man United/Doubt for Liverpool

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has this evening revealed that N’Golo Kante has picked up a fresh injury problem.

United run riot

The Blues travelled to Old Trafford on Sunday evening, for a high-profile Premier League opening weekend meeting with Manchester United.

The matchup came as Frank Lampard’s first competitive outing in charge of his former club.

Adding further importance to the clash, meanwhile, was the fact that all of Chelsea’s other top-6 rivals had already secured 3-point hauls over the weekend.

In the end, however, the Londoners failed to get the job done in Manchester, to put it lightly.

Despite having impressed with their flowing football in patches throughout proceedings, Chelsea struggled to cope with United’s frequent breakaways from deep, eventually resulting in Marcus Rashford (2), Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James all finding the net en route to a 4-0 victory for the hosts.

Kante blow

And Frank Lampard has this evening revealed that his side’s defeat was not the only negative to have come from Chelsea’s trip to Old Trafford.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the Blues’ UEFA Super Cup meeting with Liverpool tomorrow night, Lampard confirmed that N’Golo Kante, who was only fit enough to be introduced off the bench on Sunday, actually picked up a fresh fitness problem during his 20-minute cameo.

As such, the French midfielder is now in doubt to feature versus Liverpool:

‘The selection of Kante on the bench [against Manchester United] was because he’d missed a big part of pre-season and the whole of his off-season so he wasn’t ready.’

‘He actually picked up another small injury in the game, which is always a danger when you’re trying to bring players back, so we’re assessing that for tomorrow and I have to make a decision with him this evening.’
