Brilliant Kieran Tierney proved vs England why he should be the next Arsenal captain

Brilliant Kieran Tierney proved vs England why he should be the next Arsenal captain

Scotland’s hard-fought draw with England this evening saw Kieran Tierney showcase once more why he is a future Arsenal captain.

All square

Steve Clarke’s men made the trip to Wembley a short time ago, for a crucial Euro 2020 outing.

The Tartan Army headed into proceedings desperate to avoid a 2nd-straight defeat, after being put to the sword by the Czech Republic in the nation’s Group D opener.

And, when all was said and done in London, avoid defeat is precisely what Scotland managed.

A hard-fought 90 minutes eventually saw the Scots secure a deserved share of the spoils, courtesy of an inspired defensive display.

John Stones did go close to putting England in front early on, but, from here on out, the visitors stood tall, to hold the likes of Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane firmly in check.

In turn, ahead of the final round of Group D fixtures, Scotland remain in with a shot of booking their spot in the Euros’ last-16.

Tierney masterclass

On the back of the action coming to a close at Wembley, a whole host of Scottish stars, unsurprisingly, have since been singled out for praise.

The likes of Billy Gilmour, Grant Hanley and Lyndon Dykes all impressed over the course of the 90 minutes, with Chelsea’s midfield talent having been named the ‘Star of the Match’ following the full-time whistle:

None, though, embodied everything so right with Scotland’s stellar showing more than Kieran Tierney.

The stopper, so badly missed in his nation’s opening day defeat to the Czechs, was reintroduced from the off this evening, in a central defensive role.

And to say that Tierney went on to justify his inclusion would be something of an understatement. The 24-year-old absolutely dazzled from start to finish, amid a near perfect all-round display.

Tierney showcased the entire repertoire of a modern defender, looking confident and effective in possession, aggressive and driven out of it, and, as always, utterly relentless in his work-rate.

Perhaps most impressive of all when it came to the performance of the Tartan Army’s gifted stopper, though, was his leadership.

The former Celtic man marshalled Scotland’s backline superbly, leading by example not only in his communication, but also flawless decision-making.

And such efforts, in turn, should have been taken full notice of by his club.

Arsenal, so long crying out for a true leader at the back, now boast the very definition of one in Tierney.

The Gunners’ current captain is of course hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but, if Mikel Arteta has any intention of instilling a true winning culture at the Emirates over the seasons to come, he will see to it that Tierney replaces the Gabonese at the earliest opportunity.
