Anthony Joshua involved in car crash with two confirmed dead
The heavyweight boxer is confirmed to be in a stable condition after the accident
Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Nigeria on Monday that resulted in two deaths.
The former two-time heavyweight champion is understood to have suffered only minor injuries.
Joshua was travelling in the rear of a vehicle on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, an area connected to his family heritage, when the crash occurred. Police confirmed that two people lost their lives as a result of the collision.
Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo explained the circumstances surrounding the incident, saying: “The accident happened as a result of a burst tire on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road.
“For now, I’m aware of two fatalities and Joshua himself has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention. The Command will issue a press release soon.”
Joshua had been spending time in Africa following his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami less than two weeks ago.
Footage circulating online, which has not been verified, appeared to show the boxer sitting shirtless in the passenger area of a damaged vehicle, surrounded by broken glass and looking shaken.
Promoter Eddie Hearn also addressed the situation, speaking to Daily Mail Sport while away on holiday: “I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident,” he said.
“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.
“We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”
Joshua’s victory over Paul marked the 29th win of his professional career from 33 bouts and had appeared to move him closer to a potential long-discussed meeting with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury, who is currently retired.
