LA Galaxy kick off below the play-off line, but there’s still time for the five-times MLS Cup winners to salvage this season.
It has been a very tough week for LA who needed a 99th minute penalty from Riqui Puig to salvage a draw away to Nashville last weekend.
That’s after Javier Hernández failed to convert from 12 yards, the second time Chicharito had seen a penalty saved in a week.
Then, on Wednesday night, Greg Vanney’s team suffered a very damaging result, battered 3-0 by Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.
So, having actually failed to win any of their last four, the Galaxy are one place below the play-off spots, three points adrift Real Salt Lake.
The Galaxy still have to play RSL in Carson, with their other remaining fixtures both on the road, namely a Cali Clásico and a trip to Houston.
So, it’s still all to play for, but LA cannot afford to drop points in this one.
Colorado Rapids meanwhile are only one point below their hosts but, having played a game more, face an even steeper uphill battle.
Robin Fraser’s team could hardly be in better recent form though having won both matches this week, 3-1 against Vancouver and then 2-1 over San Jose.
Diego Rubio scoring in both matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
However, on the road, the Rapids have won just once all season, this a crazy 5-4 victory over RBNY in early-August.
So, LA Galaxy will be confident of claiming the victory they so desperately need at Dignity Health Sports Park.
