Two sides in the thick of very different seasons to date when it comes to on-pitch success in Ligue 1 are set to go head to head at the Stade Francis-Le Blé on Sunday, October 9th.

The clubs in question? Brest and Lorient.

The former, at present, find themselves in the thick of the battle against the drop from France’s top-flight.

After battling their way to a respectable mid-table finish in 2021/22, Brest have since endured nothing short of a nightmare opening to the new term.

All told, Les Pirates have notched just a solitary win from nine, slipping to defeat on no fewer than five occasions in the process.

Such woes have culminated in Michel Der Zakarian’s troops being sucked firmly into the Ligue 1 relegation scrap, with a 1-1 stalemate at Auxerre last time out having left Brest sitting 3rd from bottom in the table, with just six points to their name.

At Lorient, on the other hand, the mood is an altogether more positive one at present.

Les Merlus are currently flying high in 3rd in Ligue 1, trailing only champions and table-toppers Paris Saint-Germain and, directly above them, Olympique de Marseille.

This comes with Lorient, remarkably, having marched on to victory in seven of their own nine fixtures to date.

The most recent of these came in their post-international break return to the pitch last weekend, when a late strike on the part of Theo Le Bris, nephew of manager Regis, condemned LOSC Lille to a 2-1 defeat at the Stade du Moustoir.

This, all told, made it 15 points from an available 15 secured by the Merlus since early last month.
