Match preview

The headline fixture of the upcoming weekend in Ligue 1, without question, is set to play out at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, October 16th.

The clash in question will see arguably French football’s two biggest clubs lock horns, when Paris Saint-Germain play host to Olympique Marseille.

As things stand, the sides are separated by just three points, after Marseille, last time out, wasted the opportunity to draw level with the table-topping champions in altogether bizarre fashion.

Fresh off an electric start to the campaign, giving rise to seven wins and two draws from nine, Igor Tudor’s troops welcomed relegation-battling Ajaccio to the Stade Velodrome.

When all was said and done, though, the hosts slipped to a first defeat of the term, after Leonardo Balerdi’s own goal added to a Bevic Moussiti-Oko equaliser inside 25 minutes.

Marseille, in turn, not only blew their shot to take joint-ownership of Ligue 1, but too found themselves leapfrogged by Lorient.

Upcoming opponents PSG, on the other hand, too dropped points last weekend, albeit only two, as opposed to Marseille’s three.

This came as Christophe Galtier’s men were held at bay by relegation-battling Stade de Reims, drawing a first blank of the season in front of goal.

The absence of Lionel Messi proved altogether telling, with the Argentine’s incisive passing and dribbling abilities sorely missed not only on the domestic front, but once more in midweek, en route to a 1-1 Champions League stalemate with Benfica.

Luckily for the capital giants, though, Messi is expected to feature from the off on Sunday, having been included in Galtier’s squad.

PSG, in turn, will have their sights firmly set on a return to winning ways at Marseille’s expense, a result which would see them open up a fresh three-point gap atop France’s top-flight.
