Match Preview

After a win, a draw and a loss in the early stages of their Ligue 1 return, Auxerre are sitting 10th after three games as they welcome Strasbourg to the Stade Abbe Deschamps this Saturday afternoon.

As of now, Strasbourg have failed to continue on with their excellent form shown last season that saw them miss out on Europa League football by just six points. The club would lose only nine games last time around, winning 17 and drawing 12 of the 38 games. It was, however, their fantastic attacking output that caught the eye with them scoring 60 goals and letting in just 43. What’s more, they also lost the same amount of games as second-placed Marseille.

In 2022/23, however, Strasbourg have not won a game. Monaco were up first for them, where after going 2-0 down on home soil, Habib Diallo brought one back in a 2-1 loss. Julien Stéphan’s then went on the road to meet with Nice where Kevin Gameiro got in on the act to make it 11 goals in 38 Ligue 1 appearances for the club in a 1-1 draw.

Alexander Djiku scored in the following game against Reims, as Strasbourg played out another 1-1 draw in a game where they once again couldn’t formulate much of the attacking brilliance shown last season.

After over a decade away from Ligue 1, Auxerre have returned to the top flight with only one win so far. Montpellier were the victims of their sole victory, as Nuno da Costa and Mathias Autret scored a goal each last time out. A 4-1 defeat to Lille on the opening weekend and a 2-2 draw with Angers shortly after that loss does keep them in a commendable 10th after three games.

If Strasbourg can click up top, they should win here. However, their form has been very topsy-turvy so far and Stéphan’s men will need to patch up their defensive woes to get past an Auxerre side who have so far had no problem with scoring goals in Ligue 1.
