Are Espanyol doomed to go down? Again!

Last Sunday night, Blanquiazules were smashed by their fierce rivals Barcelona at RCDE Stadium, going 4-0 down before Javi Puado and Joselu scored late consolation goals.

Thus result saw Barça clinch the title, against their fierce local rivals, and Espanyol’s ultras certainly didn’t enjoy this, invading the pitch and chasing the Barcelona players down the tunnel.

This might be the last we see of the Catalan derby for a little while because Luis García’s team remain 19th, with them having now lost nine of their last 11 fixtures.

After this, Espanyol face Atlético Madrid (H), Valencia (A) and Almería (H), which is why a second relegation in just four seasons seems inevitable.

Rayo Vallecano meanwhile are all the way up in 11th, seeking a strong end to the season as they remain, just about, in the European conversation.

Los Franjirrojos’ top seven hopes suffered a bit of a set back last weekend though as they were beaten 3-1 by Real Betis.

At home, Andoni Iraola’s team have enjoyed three successive wins, all by the same 2-1 scoreline, beating Osasuna, Barcelona and Valladolid in recent weeks.

Rayo also won 2-0 in Cornellà de Llobregat way back in August, so another victory for the Madrid-based side, this time at Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas, appears likely.
