Wrexham planning for ‘sustainable future’ after investment from Atletico Madrid owners
The Championship side have risen through the divisions in recent years under their Hollywood owners...
Phil Parkinson believes the recent investment in Wrexham will help the club establish a sustainable future.
The Red Dragons recently announced that Apollo Sports Capital (ASC), the majority owners of Spanish side Atletico Madrid, have taken a minority stake in the Championship club.
“I think it’s really positive news for the club,” Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales. “It helps the club moving forward and building a sustainable club for the future.”
ASC’s stake in Wrexham is understood to be less than 10%, with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac stating their involvement will support the club’s “vision and ambition”.
Parkinson added: “It’s a great, positive story. Everybody’s looking forward to working with the new investors.”
Reynolds and Mac remain the majority owners of the north Wales side, which also received investment from the Allyn Family in October 2024.
The latest funding is intended to further the development of Wrexham on and off the pitch, including financing improvements to the iconic Stok Cae Ras stadium.
Parkinson said he has been kept informed by the club’s chief executive, Michael Williamson, about the new developments.
“Everything stays the same football-wise, but Michael has kept me informed over the last few weeks. I was aware that there was something going on a while ago,” he explained.
“Michael rang me on Sunday saying ‘just to let you know, it’s going to be announced’ and he gave me a bit of context which enabled me to inform the staff.”
Wrexham have enjoyed a remarkable rise under their majority owners, achieving three successive promotions from the fifth-tier National League to the Championship.
“With Wrexham’s profile continuing to grow worldwide, it’s about putting those building blocks in place for the short and long-term. This is another step towards that,” Parkinson said.
“We’re a club that’s building all the time, on and off the pitch, and this is another step in that direction.”
